BUKITO SUMBAWA
West Sumbawa is one of Indonesia’s untouched regions. Raw landscapes, empty beaches, and a strong local culture define the island. While still largely unknown to the world, it has quietly become a destination for surfers in search of uncrowded waves. Slowly, word is spreading but infrastructure remains minimal. Just nature and local life.
In this setting, two friends envisioned something new: the very first ‘smos’ (if you’re from Belgium you won’t need an introduction) & coffee bar in West Sumbawa. They invited me to create the brand identity for this unique place, blending the local vibe with a contemporary (and a little Belgian, there’s the ‘smos’ again) touch.
The branding concept draws inspiration from mythical symbolism, nature, and vintage aesthetics. Central to the identity is the snake: a powerful and meaningful creature across many Indonesian islands. It represents strength, protection, and presence. The snake’s eyes became the key visual element of the system: they reappear across all icons and applications, allowing the identity to evolve and adapt for different events, moods, and moments while remaining instantly recognizable.
This project is about creating a welcoming visual identity for a place that feels new to a lot of people, yet connected with local culture: a bridge between discovery and authenticity.
Bringing the identity to life came with its own challenges. Local print production doesn’t always work the way we’re used to (oh yes, cutting lines can be completely ignored), which made execution a process of patience, adaptation, and problem-solving. But through persistence, they managed to make it work.
Today, the coffee bar is open to the public, ready to shape a new wave in West Sumbawa.
